Types of Cell Plans

Basic Plan
Single line, single user. Expect to pay a monthly fee with fixed anytime minutes. Activation fee is typically $35. There is an early termination fee. Most plans include caller ID, call waiting, and call forwarding. Pay for additional minutes, long distance and roaming unless you select a nationwide plan where every call is like a local call.

Family Plan
Share minutes with family members. Expect to pay monthly fee. The charge per additional line on the account is typically $20 per line (some carriers include second line in monthly fee). Fixed anytime minutes. Some plans include mobile-to-mobile minutes, or you can add these for an additional fee. If you do not have mobile-to-mobile minutes, both parties could be charged for the call. This double charge can quickly burn through your anytime minutes. Activation fee applies to each line, typically $35. Plan may include unlimited night and weekend minutes. Additional airtime, long distance and roaming charges (unless included in your plan). Early termination fee could apply to each line.

Pre-paid Plan
Pre-paid carriers are a good option if you use your phone only for emergencies or if you have bad credit. Carriers do not obtain credit reports on prepaid subscribers. Pre-paid minutes do expire and have to be recharged.
